What is Lotus Notes?

This is a very complex question, because Lotus Notes is many different products. Among, other things, Lotus Notes is the following:

An enterprise messaging system
A Web Browser
An Internet email client
A Web Server
A database manager
A workgroup environment
workflow management tool

Give me some examples. What can I do with Notes?

One of Notes' best applications is for a mobile work force. Let's say that you have a fleet of sales reps on the road for most of the year. These people need to visit clients with up-to-the-minute information available at their fingertips. They need to be able to supply clients with the status of orders, account balances, credit positions and so forth. They'd also like to be able to check inventory and take orders, right at the client site.

With Notes, you can do all that, simply and safely. Notes allows you to create a centralized database containing customer, product and order information, unique to each sales rep. The rep can connect his/her notebook computer several time a day and, through Replication , update their copy of the database. So when the rep appears at a customer site, the information in his/her notebook computer is current - at worst - within a few hours. And if an order is entered at the customer site, it will be transmitted back to the central computer the next time the rep dials in, automatically. All of this functionality is built into the Notes database.

Let's look at another example - Electronic Commerce. The Internet is the next major frontier for doing business, if we believe the pundits. And many companies are spending large sums of money to develop secure Electronic Commerce systems.

Well, Notes has that functionality, including security, built into its Domino Web Server.
